How to tell your horse is upset – and what you can do about it

Horses show their emotions – but often much more subtly than we are used to. If your horse is unhappy or even upset, there can be many reasons: misunderstandings in training, pain, frustration, or insecurity.

Horses often show anger through:

  3. Snapping head up / head tossing, also repeatedly
  4. Kicking with the hind legs
  5. Baring teeth, biting, or threatening gestures
  6. Running away or avoiding contact

Overburdening during training – e.g., due to unclear aids or too fast steps

Pain or physical discomfort – e.g., back, teeth, saddle

  1. Don't punish – instead, understand and analyze
  2. Stay calm – your horse is sensitive and emotions are contagious

  4. Reflect on body language – we often unconsciously send the wrong signals
  5. Take a break – it is important that you remain calm and try to regulate yourself, giving your horse a break so that the situation can relax
