Lesson 4

Secure your living room

Lesson 4

Security is not just a product, it's a process

Bruce Schneier

How do I physically secure my living room?

Secure windows and doors: Start by equipping all windows and access doors in the living room with additional locks or bolts. For windows, tilt latches are suitable, which prevent the windows from being opened from the outside without breaking the glass.

Reinforced curtains and roller shutters: Install reinforced curtains or roller shutters that not only protect against prying eyes but also provide an additional barrier against attempted break-ins. Automated roller shutters can also be controlled via timers, making the house appear occupied even when no one is home.

  • Security glass or film: If you live in an area with a high risk of break-ins, consider installing security glass or applying security film to existing glass. This makes it significantly harder to break through the glass.
  • Furniture anchoring: Large, freestanding furniture should be anchored to the wall to prevent it from being used as climbing aids during a break-in or for hiding valuable items behind.

While not all security cameras prevent crimes, research shows that in many cases, they have a deterrent effect

Digital Surveillance: Smart and Connected

  • Indoor Surveillance Cameras: Placing discreet surveillance cameras in the corners of the living room to get a full view of the entire space. Modern cameras can be integrated into your home network, allowing for live monitoring via smartphones or other digital devices.
  • Motion Sensors: Installing motion sensors that send a notification to your smartphone or trigger an alarm in case of unusual activity within the living room. These sensors can be set to be active only at certain times, for example, at night or when no one is home.

  • Smart Home Integration: Connect your surveillance cameras and motion sensors with other smart home devices. For example, when motion is detected, lights can automatically turn on, which is often enough to deter burglars.
  • Remote Monitoring and Control: Use apps and platforms that allow you to monitor the security status of your living room from anywhere. You can arm alarms, control cameras, and even communicate with people in your living room, should it be necessary.
