Among humans, eye contact is considered polite. However, looking dogs in the eye can go wrong. A fixed gaze often sends the wrong signals to unfamiliar dogs.

Among canines, staring is considered a challenge. Dogs establish their hierarchy this way. After sniffing each other, they make eye contact. If one dog then lowers its gaze, it signals submission. The other dog is recognized as higher-ranking. If neither dog backs down, a fight can ensue. Intense eye contact is therefore often perceived as threatening. If an unfamiliar dog stares at you, things can get tricky. If it also adopts a rigid posture, caution is advised.

It's different with your own dog; it understands your eye contact. Just as you read its body language, your dog increasingly reads yours. Over time, your familiar canine companion can interpret your glances.
