Dog training: When to start teaching "heel"?

It is ideal to teach a dog to walk on a leash and behave when "heeling" as early as possible, preferably during puppyhood. When a puppy is between 8 and 12 weeks old, it begins to explore and learn about its surroundings. It is important to accustom it to wearing a collar and leash during this phase and to gradually introduce it to walking on a leash.

Training should be done in short sessions and use positive reinforcement, such as praise, treats, and toys. The dog should learn step by step how to behave on a leash, how to walk in a straight line, how to slow down or speed up, and how to respond to the "heel" command.

It is important to conduct the training patiently and consistently to achieve a successful outcome. A dog that learns to walk properly on a leash and respond to the "heel" command will be a pleasant and obedient companion, offering greater freedom and safety.
